How to Make an Easy Summer Skirt for Girls

Are you ready for another darling skirt tutorial? Summer is the perfect time for skirts (I’m wearing one right now!) and girls are so fun to sew skirts for. This tutorial is brought to us by Daniela from On the Cutting Floor–so let’s let her take it away!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hello everyone, I am Daniela from On the Cutting Floor. I am very happy to be here with you. Lisa has invited me today to join you guys and make something cool and special for this summer. I have made this gathered easy summer skirt for girls.

It is a very simple concept but one of the most popular skirt for girls, mainly because of its beauty, easiness and adaptability. It is so easy to make that it does not need a pattern.

Besides, you can adapt the measurements and make one for any age (I am seriously thinking of a skirt for myself!)

Notes:

  • For this project I used a gathering foot. This is optional, but I always recommend to add it to your sewing tools; it is affordable (between 4 to 6 dollars) and it will make the gathers even and incredible easy.
  • Always remember to use a zig-zag stitch when working with knit fabrics.

Materials:

  • Fabric: ½ to ¾ yards of jersey cotton
  • Matching thread
  • Stretch needle
  • Gathering foot (optional)

Pattern instructions:

  1. Make the ruffles for the ruffle panel.
  2. Place the ruffle panel with the first panel together and sew along.
  3. Place the waistband with the first panel together, right sides facing and sew along.
  4. Close the side.
  5. Make two 1 inch buttonholes in the waistband. This is where the waist straps will go.
  6. Fold the waistband and pin.
  7. Sew along. Leave 4 inches opening on one of the sides so it will be easier to insert the strap.
  8. Make the straps by folding the strap piece and edge stitch.
  9. Put a safety pin on the strap.
  10. Insert the strap on the waistband opening.
  11. Pull the straps out from the buttonholes on the waistband.
  12. Finish your skirt by making the hemline.

This easy summer skirt is so adorable–thank you for sharing with us Daniela! One quick aside–if you haven’t already checked it out, Simple Simon and Co. is hosting their annual Skirting the Issue event again, and this easy summer skirt would be a cute way to join in the fun for a good cause!
