One of my goals at the beginning of the year was to use some of the patterns and fabric I’ve collected but never sewn (oops!). By joining the Layers blog tour for Winter Wear Designs, I knew I wanted to make the Metro Slimfit Blazer for my son and gave myself a deadline.
Last summer when I competed in Project Run & Play, I got to choose a couple of issues of One Thimble magazine for a prize. I immediately knew I wanted to make my son the Metro Slimfit Blazer from Issue 15. I love the slim cut, and knew he’d look super cute in it and a pair of the Dax trousers from the same issue. Although I didn’t get the trousers done in time for photos, they’re up next. And these green trousers I made last year look really cute with the navy.
I couldn’t believe how quick it was so sew up the fully-lined Metro Slimfit Blazer, to be honest. You know when you settle in for a long sew, and before you know it you’re done? I love it when a pattern surprises me like that.
Everything is so fun, too. I love the back vent, the silhouette, and the chance to use a fun lining. It was my first time doing a back vent, and it was so much easier than I’d imagined. I got done and thought, “that was it?”
While I love welt pockets, I skipped them this time because he doesn’t really use pockets yet. But I see myself making this blazer many times over the years with the pockets. I did hand stitch the lining in the sleeves though, even though I hate to handsew.
His measurements were for the 18 month size, and the only change I had to make was to shorten the sleeves by about 1-1/2″. By using a stretch twill, it has just a little give to make it more comfortable for him. I also chose a lightweight lining that also has quite a bit of give for the same reason.
Using stretch twill makes it more comfortable for him to wear. Try this Robert Kaufman for a great option.
He has a reputation to keep up. Ha! (We get compliments all the time from men and women at church that he always looks so handsome in his outfits. I may have too much fun dressing him for church.)
