Recreating Kate Middleton Style

I’m so super excited to share some fun news today–I’ve been cooking up a little series and today I get to tell you all about it! You may have noticed a little something new in the main menu.

It’s a sewing series entitled Recreating Kate.  Everyone love’s Kate Middleton style–it’s classic, elegant, and oh so chic. Through this series, I’ll be picking some of my favorite looks and pieces from Kate Middleton’s wardrobe and recreating them using patterns, fabric, and resources available to everyone (and at a much lower cost than you could buy them).

For the last 6 months, I’ve been using a borrowed machine after mine finally bit the dust. But not anymore–I now get to sew on this Janome DC5100 that you can find on Overstock, and I just have to tell you how much I love it.

I haven’t had it for long, but here are just a few of the things I love about it:

• I wanted a workhorse, and I got one. This machine is solid and I’m positive I’ll be using it for years and years. It’s sturdy, has die cast parts, and is infinitely more durable than my first machine.
• It’s quiet. It’s like a luxury car where you don’t have to hear every last little thing. It’s beautiful.
• It’s intuitive. Without pulling out the manual, I was able to get started without feeling lost. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a manual reader (there’s so much good stuff in a manual!), but I needed to hem something super quick and without thinking about it, I was comfortable with the machine.
• It’s got options. So many stitches (including an alphabet), automatic buttonholes, a locking stitch button, an included walking foot (there are 10 feet included), memorized needle up/down, drop in bobbin, and more. The only thing it doesn’t have is the automatic thread cutter, but I’m not complaining.

It handles knits beautifully too, which is important since I sew with so many kinds of fabric. There was no pulling, no bogging down, and no rippled seams. It was beautiful!
